3 Questions to GET OUT OF YOUR OWN HEAD
Hey, guys. Coach Andrew here from Players Fitness and Performance, also the founder of The Winning Athlete Formula: High Performance Mentoring to Win the Mental Game in Sports and in Life. I want to talk with you real quick about how to get out of your own head.
What you are currently doing isn't working clearly because over 98% of athletes I have surveyed, and this is over 500 athletes, say that they are in their own head too often and they want to learn how to be in the zone more.
Out of more than 500 athletes surveyed, 98% say they struggle with being in their own head and are UNSURE how to get out of their head and into the ZONE!
Well, you can't be in the zone if you're in your own head. So again, what you are doing right now is not working. You've got to try something new, and I'm going to share with you a proven three step system to getting out of your own head and being in the zone more often.
I am working with a collegiate athlete right now. She is a division one volleyball player. She's a beast, but she's in her own head. And she's doubting herself because she's not getting playing time, and she's starting to think to herself that the coach maybe doesn't think she's a great player and she's having all these worries and these fears.
And so what we did was we went through this three step process and not only did it help her feel better, which it's going to help you feel better too when you're in your own head, but now she's performing at the highest level she's ever performed and she's getting on the court, she's getting playing time.
So if you are feeling unmotivated, you're feeling hurt, you're feeling rejected, you're feeling frustrated with your performance, you're feeling like coach doesn't understand you, you're feeling like your teammates are out to get you...these feelings are really what being in your own head means.
Being in your own head means you are not properly managing your feelings, so that is what we must accomplish.
We must figure out how to get a better grip on why you feel the way you do and then figure out what you need to do to stop feeling that way and to get out of your own head. That's the formula.
Question number one. Why am I really feeling this way?
Why am I feeling like the coach doesn't think I'm a great player? Why am I feeling doubtful and worried that I'm not going to get onto the field? Well, for this particular athlete, she was actually worried more about what people would think from back home.
See, she had made it to the highest level of sports, but if she didn't get on the field, she was wondering, "Are people going to judge me? Are people going to think less of me? Are people going to think, man, maybe I'm not as good as they thought I was?" That's the first question you've got to ask yourself, "Why am I feeling this way?"
Question number two. Is this thought or feeling TRUE?
So is that actually true? Let me ask you the question, "Was her feeling true?" The people back home, do you think they were actually doubting her? Do you think they were actually judging her? Do you think they were actually disappointed in her if she didn't play?
I think the truth is they're probably more proud of her than ever before. They're probably like, "Dang, I can't believe she made it this far. We are so proud of you." And the truth is they probably just wanted to see her happy. They wanted to see her, even though she didn't step on the field, all they really wanted was to see that she was still confident and that she trusted herself and she knew that eventually she would get to the place where she could get playing time. So is it true? Probably not.
Here's another one. A lot of people have these feelings of, "No one gets me. No one really understands me. That person doesn't know what I'm going through."
And if you ask yourself the question, "Is that true?," I don't know...Seven billion people on the planet. Really? No one gets me? My parents who raised me, they don't get me? My coaches, they've never worked with a player like me before? Guys, there's a great chance that when you ask yourself question number two, "Is it true?," you're going to say to yourself, "Nope, that is not true at all."
Question number three. Is what I am feeling helping or hurting me?
In this girl's case, it was hurting her. There was nothing helpful coming from this, from this fear, from this doubt, from this worry. It wasn't helpful.
Once you go through these three steps in your head, this will help you feel better, okay? But what you need to do next is you need to write them down on paper. You need to get them out of your own head because, think about it, what we're talking about is getting out of your own head. So if you don't get your thoughts literally out of your own head, you're going to be stuck in your own head.
So the next step that this girl took was she wrote down her feelings on paper. She wrote down these three questions. Why am I feeling this way? Boom. Write it down. Is it true? Boom. Write it down. Number three, is what I am feeling helping or hurting me? Boom. She wrote it down.
But then, last step, if you stop there, you are doing yourself a disservice. You are stopping one step shy of the ultimate level, which is expressing your feelings out loud to another human being. Guys, we are missing this one. We are not expressing ourselves enough. We have fear of what other people might think about our fears, and then that just leads to more fear, which leads to you being in your head even more.
You've got to get out of your own head, which means being courageous. You have to be courageous, you have to take a risk, and you have to be vulnerable enough to share what is going on. And if you do that, just like this girl did, I promise you you will elevate your game and your performance to a level that you have never even seen before. You've never even dreamt it because this is one missing link.
If you want to be in the zone, you've got to get out of your own head. And if you want to get out of your own head, you've got to go through this three step process and then finish it up with expressing yourself.
